4Don't call the Alarm Co. Do IT Yourself
By Miki
I was very satisfied to find this batterry available online. I called my alarm co because the sensor was continually beeping with the low batt alert. They offered to send a repair person out "for free", but said the batterry would cost $50.00!!!! I'm so glad I found an alternative. The batterry was very easy to install & only took about 5 minutes. Truely pleased.

5Way better than buying it in a store
By Tim W
I think I paid about a third of what it would have cost me in a local store for this battery, and about a quarter of what my alarm company wanted, not including their "service" charge. Fix it yourself, get this battery.

4Good product, but with some caviats
By Devin
The good:-Extremely easy to setup, was up and running in well under 15 minutes including unboxing time.-Gateway grabs a DHCP address from your broadband router and connects to the my.vuezone site.-Smartphone clients for Android, iPhone and Blackberry devices. (Update: Blackberry is no longer supported)-Cameras are completely wireless, allowing for extremely easy installation-Cameras seem to have a very decent range from the gateway.-No line of sight needed for the cameras, no problems for me going through walls and floors of brick, wood and drywall. Metal building supplies may pose issues though, but this will be the case with any wireless camera.-1 year of Premium service comes with the system, currently only $49.95 per year after that.-Snapshots/videos are recorded out to the website immediately, and can be played back from almost any internet connected computer. The bad:-Motion sensing does not work through glass.-Cannot set ignore times for motion sensing/alerting, it is either on or off for each camera.-Low-light performance leaves much to be desired. Despite several streetlights, no picture was visible in an area easily visible to the human eye.-Operating temperatures limited to 32º to 122º F, so mounting options will be limited to temperature controlled locations for most locations. (Update: per Avaak Tech Support, this is a limitation of the batteries, not the camera.)-Cameras have no wired power option, so you'll be using up batteries even in areas where you could easily connect wired power.-Fixed 60 degree field of view on the cameras is a bit limiting.Overall, the system is good with a few caveats. With more camera options, it would be great. Unfortunately, it appears Avaak has gone the other way, as the Outdoor rated camera has disappeared from their site.I would love to see cameras with an AC power option, an outdoor rated dome camera (Pan/tilt/zoom would be outstanding) and perhaps others integrated into the great gateway and website that Avaak has going for them.Update:Outdoor (waterproof) camera mounts are now available! This doesn't address the temperature restrictions of the batteries, but gives you a lot more flexibility in the mounting location. Avaak has changed their service plans several times from when this review was written, so check the latest account details on their site. They also run sales on the service renewal from time to time, so renew when the sales are going to save yourself a few bucks. My concerns with eating through the batteries seems to have been unfounded, as I'm still on the original batteries in all the cameras. Also, the sticky-back on the mounts should be looked at as a BACKUP to the screw slot on all but perfectly smooth surfaces. I had a camera take a nasty 8 foot fall onto concrete which left a crack in the housing, but it still works perfectly.

5Perfect for basic use...
By Matthew
I have had my VUE SM2700 motion detection camera system up and running for about a week now, and so far so good! Installation really is a breeze, and the wireless cameras (and their mounts) are so convenient to use. I have the receiver upstairs along with one of the cameras, and the other camera is downstairs. Both cameras have perfect reception and the viewing resolution is better than I expected. Also, there are three adjustable settings for the available lighting the room provides, which is accessed through the software so you can easily change the settings even when you are away.I tested the motion detection once, and it worked fine. An email was immediately sent showing a video clip of the movement. This can be adjusted from a 10 second or 40 second clip. I will do more extensive testing at a later date, but so far it seems to work well. The 2x zoom function also works well. You get to decide what to zoom in on, and the resolution is excellent. The movements on screen are a little laggy, but that is to be expected and really its not that bad at all. If someone was removing something from your home, I think you would be able to get a clear shot at the persons face along some point of a 40 second motion video. A lot also depends on how far you setup your cameras from the objects they may be viewing. The brighter the available lighting and the closer the better.I have had zero issues using the software on a PC, IPAD, and on my Android phone. They all three work perfect so far. This is great news, something that actually works! So far I am very happy with this setup. I will say that this is NOT a high end surveillance system so dont buy it with unrealistic expectations. However, for basic home use I think you will be hard pressed to find anything better anywhere near this price range. I only wish a future firmware upgrade will add a schedule setting that allows the motion detection to turn off/on at a certain time. That way when you come home at 5pm everyday, you dont have to disable it manually.Otherwise, no real complaints! Two thumbs up!

3Quick and easy set up but poor frame rate
By Pikmin
It is very easy to set up the cameras and "gateway". No technical knowledge is necessary. The gateway has one USB port but the manual and web site do not mention any use of it. I wish the recorded video could be stored in a USB flash attached to the gateway. Lens are not wide-angle. To capture a view of entire room, the camera has to be placed high on the ceiling.I am not happy with the frame rate. Eight frame per second at 320 x 160? Come on, this is not in the 80s.A nice feature will be providing advanced functions by connecting to the gateway directly, just like you connect to the web site inside a Linksys router and change the settings. This feature may be present but hidden.Don't bother to view the camera at night. The FAQ web site says at least 40-watts light bulb is required. I tried it. The image was very grainy and painful to see.Overall, the product offers basic functions of live video camera. Make sure you have adequate lighting, or preferably in bright daylight. Online registration is quick and easy. I can view the camera immediately after registration. However, if your network is down such as no Internet due to ISP (Internet Service Provider) issue, you're doomed. You can't view the camera.

4Does Some Things Well, Others Not So Much
By KVH
I've had a z-wave system set up in my home for about 2 years. Nothing fancy, a few lights and a couple of small appliances. I was using software (the old Homeport software for Mac) on my Mac Mini to run the whole thing, and I could access it remotely using LogMeIn, but this was somewhat less than ideal and I knew my new wife would never jump through those hoops. So when the Vera Lite came out under $200 I decided to check it out. Setup was fairly easy although it took a couple of router resets and Vera resets to get everything recognized on the network. I had to delete all the modules from the primary controller I had been using so I could add them to the Vera as the primary. If you've done this before it's not too bad, and the UI5 interface with the Vera is easy to get used to.I was hopeful that adding a couple of cameras would be easy, but it's not. If you go to the micasaverde.com website forums you'll see lots of discussions for workarounds for various cameras. The wiki lists cameras that are basically plug and play for Vera and others than can be made to work. Recently a popular Foscam camera that worked with Vera became inoperable after a Vera software update. It appears a workaround has been achieved to correct the problem, but the steps necessary are probably more than most want to hassle with for a system that is supposed to simplify your life. This is the problem I have with micasaverde all the way around - the software development seems to be trial and error with the customers as the guinea pigs. This is fine for small niche products, but if you're entering the big leagues it's time to tighten up your development operations.I'd also like to integrate this with an alarm system in my home, but again the number of compatible alarm systems is very limited and the workarounds are cumbersome. I can't imagine jumping through all the hoops to get it set up only to have something go wrong while I'm out of town, and my wife having to deal with it with two kids and her job. I think she would demand I trash the whole system when I got home and ADT would be there the next day installing their system (along with their monthly monitoring fee, which I don't want to pay). As it is, I decided to keep the alarm system and the z-wave system separate. This requires double sensors on some doors, but so be it.So overall this works well for controlling z-wave modules, and the iPhone apps (Vera and Square Connect) work very well - no issues at all. I'm less than happy with the compatible camera selection and disappointed in the alarm system integration options. I haven't tried any locks yet, but that's the next step - probably within the next couple of months. It's simplified the light and appliance module control, so four stars. If a wide variety of cameras could be easily integrated I'd give it five.

4Well worth the trouble if you have the patience and tech knowhow
By ReaderX
I relied heavily on the reviews of others in making my decision to buy into Z-Wave home automation technology so I felt the need to contribute.I now have my Z-Wave installation working reliably and consistently and I am very happy with the investment in money and time to get it working. I have many years as a professional in the electronics and information technology fields though and I like to tinker.I have...a MiCasaVerde VeraLite,a MiCasaVerde SmartSwitch,a KwikSet lock,a Fortrezz water/temperature sensor,a 2GIG CT100 thermostat andtwo Foscam IP camerasall working properly and consistently and all bought through Amazon.com. All at a total cost of that of a single iPad. I am a huge fan and frequent customer of Amazon.com and less of a fan of iPads.I have written a script and automated it to send an email to me of the status of my devices every couple hours. It tells me the lock is locked (or unlocked), the appliance connected to the SmartSwitch is turned off (or on). It also sends me the current temperatures of my thermostat upstairs and that of my leak/temperature sensor downstairs. If the water leak sensor detects water downstairs or it goes below 45 degrees it sends me an immediate text message notification. If my lock is unlocked or someone enters an invalid code or its battery goes low the KwikSet lock sends me an immediate text message notification. With all this I feel very assured that I know what is going on in home while I'm away and can control the environment. MiCasaVerde provides a nice, free, secure internet site for controlling and monitoring my VeraLite controller and Z-Wave devices remotely. Not bad.Battery life is a frequent question on devices. My thermostat battery level is at 95 % after a month of use (no C wire connected). The KwikSet lock has been in service 3 months and the battery is at 60%. Using the motor to frequently lock and unlock will run the battery down quickly I expect so I use the key and manual lever withever possible. The Fortrezz leak/temperature sensor has been in service a month and the battery is still at 99%. So battery life isn't a problem for me.The only criticism I have is that devices do not work over the distance that is advertised. It is commonly said that a distance of 25 meters or about 80 feet can be achieved with Z-Wave. This may be true if you're setting a network up in a basketball court but most of us have walls in our homes.Initially I set the system up in an older home with plaster walls. I had trouble getting reliable operation 15-20 feet away with a wall or two between devices. It was unacceptable at this location and would have gotten 2 STARS. But I was able to pick everything up and move it to its final destination in a newer home 150 miles away that has sheetrock walls. All the devices found each other and the VeraLite connected to the internet toot suite (pardon my french) real quick at the new location. 4 STARS at the new location. The range was better in the newer home and things settled down to work very well in this location. Still the range between any 2 devices wasn't half of what was advertised. But by centrally locating the VeraLite I was able to span a distance of about 50 feet with only one plugged in device acting as a repeater. The MiCasaVerde SmartSwitch does a good job of repeating the Z-Wave signal and even repeating the secure protocol used to talk with the KwikSet lock. So I am now satisfied with effective communications range of my installation knowing that adding more repeating devices will extend it even more and I can cover the entire home.In summary, I had a little frustration with the communications range initially but with a little perseverance, EQUIPMENT RELOCATION TO A NEWER HOUSE and my technical background I prevailed and am happy with my installation and the peace of mind it brought.Good luck. Let me know if I can answer any questions.

3Great possibilities, poor execution
By Don Marshall
I struggled with whether to give this two or three stars. I gave it three because it really can be a great product. But anyone buying this should be forewarned -- it comes with almost zero documentation, and the latest user interface is known to be buggy and difficult. I am shocked that a company producing a product that is potentially this good would provide so little instructions on how to use it. Operating even the most basic functions requires you to conduct research or just do a lot of trial-and-error work. The good news is that there is a very active user forum with plenty of people who try to be helpful. I've gotten stuck a couple times in setting up the Vera to control different devices, and forum contributors provided useful support. As many people on the user forum have said -- we would gladly pay more for the product if the company would hire a couple people to provide documentation and user support. When you do work your way through the set up, the Vera does what it's supposed to do. From the research I've done, I haven't found another product that has all of the features of the Vera and is relatively inexpensive. Before you buy, however, go check out the user forum at [...] to make sure you understand what you're getting into.

3Better than nothing....
By J. Graganta
The purchase of this product was a knee jerk reaction/purchase to being broken into last fall. The choice of having nothing vs having to subscribe to an alarm service was not pleasing. A relative has a similar DIY alarm system and said they were happy with it and this provided a middle ground. As stated, the instructions are a little hard to digest at first, but once you understand it, it's fairly easy to program the unit and sensors. (The picture shows the alarm having an extendable antenna as well as the sensors, but the unit received did not have any.)The supplied no name batteries didn't last very long. The one motion sensor that is in a high traffic area died with in 3 months and the replacement battery is not doing so well (brand name). So don't be surprised if you have to replace the 9V battery twice or three times a year in high traffic areas. The remote control battery is an odd ball size that I only found at Radio Shack (didn't look online, it was actually stocked). I purchased extra motion sensors and the door sensors I have not mounted yet. Keep extra batteries for the sensors around and check the sensors that they are working. The unit is suppose to have a battery backup, but I have yet to see how that works. If you have to manually switch it over, then it's pointless (only skimmed the manual). I unplugged the unit expecting it to keep "alive" and it went off. If I want it to last/work during a power outage, I might as well get an uninterrupted power supply they use for computers. Also, when the unit is plugged into the phone line and you are using it, it makes a beeping or chirping noise that is heard. If the phone is plugged into the unit, it actually hangs up on you! Factory says this isn't right, but I don't want to sent it back and NOT have protection.I purchased two units, giving one to a friend who has experienced multiple break-ins. Since then, he has been broken into once since it was installed. The unit did call him and his kids and he called me to check his home (less then 5 min way). He also did not use the door sensor, only relying on the supplied motion alarm. The alarm will scare people off, but be warned, there is still time between activating and actually getting someone there- at least 5-7 min or more. If you want a faster response time, then pay for a monitored alarm service. (Or purchase the external siren to alert neighbors quicker.) Once I walked into my house forgetting to disarm the unit with the remote control, it went off using the motion sensor and called me with in 5-7 seconds of going off. I test my sensors at least every 3-4 months to make sure they set the unit off and to make sure it calls me.I have experienced one false alarm. The unit went off and called. Upon inspection of home, the unit reset it's self (I didn't memorize all the codes for remote operation)- all doors and windows were secure. Unit was still armed when entering (used remote to disarm). It is unclear if it was a malfunction, or if the motion sensors detected a movement. We have never had any issues with drapes and heat vents in the past, but we suspected it. Unless someone was trying to jimmy a sliding glass door and brushed up against the blinds creating movement(?)- but I have not tested that idea.It was recommend by local law enforcement that an external audible siren be also used. The internal alarm and unit going off is enough for 'noise' inside the home, but for an alarm to work effectively, an external siren is suggested to alert neighbors of any problems. (I maybe ordering more internal plug in sirens or one or two external battery powered sirens.)Would I recommend this alarm? Yes and no. Does it work... yes, but not perfectly. Are there better out there, I'm sure there are. Do your research, see what is available. I have it already, so I'm making do.(Alarms are just one tool to help secure a location. It is not a substitute for not having good door locks/dead bolts. Next step in home defense is to install cameras to record the exterior and any visitors. That way, intruders 'risk' being identified if they try.... Multiple layers of protection will HOPEFULLY deter intruders from choosing your home. And yes, dogs are part of that layer also!)PS-IMPORTANT NOTE---- IMPORTANT NOTEIMPORTANT: When using an alarm system that does NOT call a security monitoring service, DO NOT tell people that. It's better to make people think it is a MONITORED service. If you tell "friends" and the word gets around, the wrong people could find out. And then the wrong people know that they have "time" before someone actually shows up. Right?

4OK
By K. Hartung
There are a lot of instructions on this product, although complicated at first, if you follow the instructions correctly and take your time to read them, it will work. The package come with the included sensors already paired with the base, so, all I needed to do was to change the passwords and include my phone numbers. When it calls me, I can hear what is going on ONLY if the alarm is in the silent mode, since it has a pretty loud noise coming from the base (where the mic is).The door sensor works pretty good, every time I forgot to disarm, it goes off. The motion detector, it is not the most reliable, but it also works, I believe the reliability has to do with the fact that it seems to read the environment every 5 seconds or so.I live in a small apartment, and I don't know what is the actual range of these devices and cannot say if they work well in large houses/apartments.So far, it is working OK.

1Get Less Than What You Pay For
By J. Blair
The instructions for this product are terrible and make little or no sense. The "chapters" follow no logic and it was written by someone who does not speak fluent English as seen by the multiple spelling and grammar mistakes.Though I was able to get the basic features to work with this alarm, I was not able to program the phone features. You cannot remotely access the alarm by phone if you have a home answering machine. On two occations the alarm went off for no reason(not armed) most likely due to radio frequency interference. The entire unite shuts off without an alarm sounding if you simply unplug it from the wall, so I am not sure why it has rechargable batteries.Nobody answers the toll free customer service number and they have yet to respond to my voicemail.
