4Viable Monitoring and Security with Added Cost
By J. Dassaro
Reviewing The Netgear VZSM2200-100NAS is difficult because there are two key components to the system. The first is hardware. The second is the monitoring access service provided via Netgear. However, the Netgear VZSM2200-100NAS represents a viable option in home monitoring and security, regardless of additional costs associated with the service (monitoring plan). Though I consider the cost of the Netgear somewhat high in comparison to similar products, I am not considering this in my review rating but will provide additional notes. On HardwareThe product hardware is well made, can be used somewhat discreetly, provides great mounting variations, and simply works (for me) out of the box (connecting to a Linksys router). Note: The camera is not weatherproof though Netgear sells a weatherproof housing. The camera is discreet enough as to not draw attention if mounted above line of sight but will definitely be spotted if someone is looking for it unless you camouflage adequately. While the device does not provide audio or infrared (nighttime) viewing capability, the video I acquired (640 x 480 max at 4 fps max) was clear, though a little "jerky," with sufficient natural ambient or artificial light, typically in the 30 watt range (another reviewer noted 40 watts are required). In lower light levels, the signal to noise ratio shows a steep drop. In other words, if you are using the Netgear to monitor your front porch, you will be fine in daylight or at night with the porch light on; conversely, without light, the camera is of no value in my opinion. However, for nighttime viewing, you can set the exposure via the Vuezone control panel. Though this works to some degree, the added step is an annoyance and likely missed by most people. The Netgear is a true wireless device. Setup is less than 15 minutes with a firmware update included. You connect the receiver to an open port on your router, bring the camera close to the receiver, press the sync button, and setup the camera at the desired location. The receiver is powered by a typical power supply whereas the cameras are powered by CR1231a batteries (not that common really). These batteries are designed to provide approximately six months of service life with an activation period of about 5 minutes a day. I expect to burn through them very fast as a practical matter. In our house (4,000 sq feet 2 stories), we acquired a good signal between the receiver and the camera in all but the furthest reaches of the house (we tested various locations and circumstances such as open and closed doors). It should be noted we connected to a Linksys router in what I would call a reliable wired and wireless home network environment with the router and Netgear base station (receiver) almost centrally located. As with any wireless setup, if you have your router at one end of a large multi-story home and devices at the other extreme, you are bound to run into issues. At this point, you would need wired network connections for reliability. On the Required ServiceAs far as I can tell, there is no method to view the captured video locally, without an Internet connection (I will correct this review if I find otherwise). While this may make some sense in a pure security configuration due to the advanced features of the camera, it makes little to no sense for a casual home user. The viewing, recording, and camera management service, to include automated alerts, is provided through Vuezone.com . Service is free the first 30 days then $50 a year (not per month as some reviews state on other sites). However, there is a "free" level of service forgoing the advanced functionality. While the casual home user may find this troublesome, there is a good chance small business owners will find it a good value. Through Vuezone, you can set automated alerts, manage cameras, view video, download video, and set cameras to record as well as many other functions. Using Vuezone, you can also perform these same functions via any of the mobile phone apps to include Android and Iphone (apps are free). The Netgear Vuezone service appears to have ticked off a few reviewers across the Internet. However, the service provides advanced level functionality not typically associated with comparable products as well as dedicated cloud video storage, which relieves the end-user of the need to store large volumes of video. So, there appears to be a clear delineation between what casual users and either advanced users or small business owners can benefit from. If I owned a small business, the $50 a year would make sense. However, if I was using the product casually in a home environment, I can see where the issue is, especially since there is no way to view the video locally, without an Internet connection.PROS-Very easy setup-Scalability of the system in adding additional cameras-Advanced user level control-Small size of cameras and mounting options-Wireless reliability (in my environment)-Mobile apps are free and work-Cameras are truly flexible as they do not require AC power (see Cons also)CONS-Don't expect real video-No ability to view video locally-No audio-Instructions are sparse at times-Cameras cannot be accessed locally-VueZone web page uses flash and may have issues with MAC OS's (though a fix is in the works)-Additional service charge (VueZone subscription)- though many will have no issue with this-USB port with no instructions-Cameras require CR123a batteries (buy in bulk) and can deplete quickly based on use.In summation, the Netgear VZSM2200-100NAS is a decent performer (given current field) with some drawbacks. I believe this product is best suited for small business owners seeking to expand their security at nominal cost (really an exponential Return of Investment). However, casual home users should probably compare the D-Link line of cameras and devices to see if that system better suits their planned usage.

2Nice hardware but not the best quality pics & vids plus you have to pay for some services
By KindlePad
I have a few Dlink Cameras and am pretty happy with those. They are wireless & require ac power but Dlink doesn't offer a recording service for these.I tried this netgear, it was fairly easy to set up & create your online account but I was really unhappy to see that for more than a 30 day trial period of all the features, they immediately ask you to pony up a monthly or yearly fee for saved recordings. That was not made apparently anywhere on the packaging. The hardware is nice, the cameras a small and attach via magnets to the bases which can be stuck on a surface or drilled / screwed in. It also comes with batteries. There is a little hub you plug into your router, must be wired connection and then you sync the small cameras with the hub. Once you have registered with their site, the hub finds the cameras and you can view them. There is an option to have the cameras "watch" for motion and then start recording for a set interval of time - you can change the time it records. The idea is if you have an area you want to keep an eye on (say your backyard) you point one of these and set it to record on motion. Then, you can view the recordings (or just the live streams) on either your computer or your tablet / smart phone.Problems: The live image quality was overall very poor. I could make out that yes, thats my backyard but the kid running in my back yard could be anything from a large dog to a garden gnome. It's that poor. What's the point on having a video monitoring system if the quality is so poor the results are close to useless. Also there is no audio. Also, when I registered, the website told me that to use the smartphone or tablet app to watch my cams or recordings cost $$ but that I had 30 dars for free. I really don't like a system that costs XX to buy & then they with hold key features unless you pay.

4Elegant, small, works without audio as designed for $0 or $4 a month
By Eugene Tenenbaum
The Netgear VZSM2200 has the free plan that includes: email alerts with photo; live video on computer, tablet, phone; remote dis-/arming; support for 2 cameras, 1 location, & 1 friend. The $4/$? a month ($50/$? a year) plan adds: video email alerts; support for 5/15 cameras, 1/3 location, & 10/15 friends; digital pan and zoom; on-line video storage 250/500 MB; high definition (HD) photo mode; publishing videos to YouTube and photos to Flickr. The elegant camera is only 2.5-inch tall & not weatherproof, detects motion, has 640x480-pixel resolution, and records 4 frames per second (fps) without sound, or 6 fps at 320x240. The day video quality is good, but 30-40-watt (W) light is needed at dark nights. Unfortunately, it is powered by expensive & not rechargeable CR123 batteries lasting for 15 hours or 6 months when activated for 5 min/day. The setup of the 6.5-inch tall & elegant station (network gateway) is easy and short. The system is expandable and works smoothly as designed. The baby monitoring & cheap security systems do not detect motion, and big security systems are expensive, ugly, &... big.
