Great Home Security System
By Terence P. Garvey
I've owned my Shield Tech STS-410 home security system for about 6 weeks now and it's just about completely installed. Don't misinterpret this. I would say I've spent a total of about 12 hours programming and installing the system over that time. The user manual is as good as I would hope for. What I really like about it is, if you maintain it as intended as you set up the system, it becomes a specification for the installation which you will reference often as the system is used. When you want to know what zone 03 is, what sensor your installed there and how you set up that sensor (e.g. is the alarm immediate or is it delayed?), you can simply look it up in the user manual. This is my first DIY home security system so I have nothing to compare it to. If I were to change one thing about the design it would be to allow pairing of new sensors without having to remove batteries from all other paired sensors. With the system the way it is, let's say you want to add a smoke detector (which did not come with my package) after the system is fully installed and working, you have to remove the batteries from all other sensors (paired or not). That can be a major inconvenience when you consider that some sensors are not easy to get to (e.g. motion sensors installed near ceiling). I think I have figured out a work-around which I will soon have the opportunity to test. It is to move the key pad (to which you pair all sensors) beyond the range of all paired sensors (I would think the effect would be the same as removing all the batteries). Of course, this will cause the tamper switch on the key pad to set off the alarm. And, unless you disable the Sensor Lost feature, that will cause the alarm to go off also. Once you get the key pad out of range, you should be able to pair the sensors that you are adding to the system.I had to call technical support a total of 3 times to get the system to the point where it could be installed. Two of those times, I'm too embarrassed to admit what they were for (remember, this was my first time). In all 3 instances, I was able to reach a tech rep right away or was able to leave a voice-mail which was responded to within 24 hours. I have no problem with the tech support which is staffed by English speaking Americans who seem to have a thorough knowledge of the product. Consider the irony: I bought a security system produced by an Indian company and the tech support is provided by Americans.Installation tips: The user manual advises against writing on the sensors as you pair them (for some reason, sticky notes, which can fall off, are preferred). I wrote the zone number with a Sharpie on each sensor so I knew where it was to be installed. I also wrote where each sensor was to be installed in the user manual as I paired each sensor. If you want to alarm a "rolling" garage door, buy the sensor that is designed for that purpose. I tried a door/window sensor which resulted in destroying one of the magnet strips as it was shaved off the door by the door track. Be prepared to hear a beeping sound the first time you arm the system. This is just to tell you that you have XX seconds (user-programmable)to get out of the house before the system becomes fully armed. You may also hear this beeping sound when you open a sensor with the system armed if you've selected the delay setting for that sensor. I have programmed our system to call our two cell phones and two office phones when the alarm is set off. I have not set it up to call the authorities yet. But I will when I gain confidence that there will not be an excessive number of false alarms. I'm thinking I will let the local authorities know what I am doing before I do that to see what recommendations they may have. The package I bought came with 10 door/window sensors and 5 motion sensors some of which I had no immediate need for. Because of the one-active-battery-at-a-time constraint, I paired all of the sensors before I commenced installation. I now have 2 door/window sensors and q motion sensor paired but deactivated to use as spares in the future. When I want to use them, all I need to do is change their set-up code through the key pad to activate them. If I hadn't paired them, I'd have to deal with the battery constraint when I need to use them.I've now been using the system for a full week and I have yet to get one false alarm. I especially like the ability to arm and disarm the system from outside of the house using one of the 4 fobs that came with the system. I also like the ability, when called by the system, to select "listen" mode through the phone so I can hear what is going on in the house. At this time, I'm confident that I will have enough information from the system to decide if I should alert the authorities to a potential break-in.As the economy gets worse, I am seeing more and more accounts of break-ins in my town. It is a great comfort to me and my wife to know that we have done what we can to protect our property. I see no reason at this time to pay for external monitoring since there is nothing they can do that I can't do myself using the phone's robust features. I highly recommend this product. All of the components are of good quality and work as I would expect them to. Good luck.

A very good device for its price
By SK
I have had this installed for 3 weeks. It has been working well; I am pretty satisfied with the device.A few suggestions: The manual is incomplete. The vendor should provide 1) a step-by-step installation guide leading up to a final walk-thru-test; 2) a complete description of menus on the main keyboard. It took some time (and a few phone calls to tech support) to install all of these gadgets, but fortunately, the tech support person (Andrew) was very helpful.Pros: Very good bang for the money.Cons (suggestions for future improvement):Is incompatible with answering machine--a huge inconvenience. The motion sensors are too big.The tamper switch on the back of the keypad is annoying, as it cannot be disabled. The voices from the keypad is not very clear.

Easy to setup and works pretty well
By Rchess9513
It's low price obviously comes with some disadvantages and that is the low quality of many of the sensors. Motion detectors only work marginally well, a couple don't work at all. The small keypad was inoperational so I contact the company and they sent me another free of charge. It was inoperational as well. Order more sensors than you need. Once you get it setup, it works well.
